NTCET Subjects

Diverse Range of Subjects

Good Shepherd Lutheran College offers a diverse range of subjects at Stage 1 and Stage 2 level. The subjects offered are tailored to the student cohort and allow a student to follow their career pathway – be it into Medicine and Medical Sciences; into acting and a Performing Arts Academy; into a practical trade, just to name a few pathway options. For more information please either contact the NTCET Coordinator or visit the SACE Board Website: http://www.sace.sa.edu.au/

Students may, (through negotiation with the NTCET Coordinator) access subjects not offered at the College through the NT School of Distance Education (NTSDE). Additional information can be found at: https://www.ntsde.nt.edu.au/

Selecting appropriate subjects can be a very difficult task. In Year 10, students should have mapped out their pathway in their Personal Learning Plan (PLP) class. If they have not completed their PLP or are still unsure as to what career they would like to pursue after school, then they are to seek advice and support from the Student Pathways Coordinator. Students should research the different pathways into University, TAFE and employment. It is also recommended that students discuss possible course selection with their parents and subject teachers before making final decisions. (Year 9 and above students are encouraged to attend the annual Senior Years Expo, usually held late July / early August. It is an event which showcases the type of learning, assessments and experiences students can expect in each given subject. Learning Area Coordinators, teachers and Year 12 students are on hand to discuss subjects with parents and students.

Students are encouraged to keep their options open enough to avail themselves of courses and career alternatives. As is often the case, if students do not have a career in mind they should choose subjects that they are good at, interested in and enjoy doing.

Subject Selection

Subject Selection occurs in Term 3 for Year 10 students moving into Year 11 and Pre-Tertiary Year 11 students choosing which four of their subjects to continue into Year 12.

Senior Years Expo

Prior to choosing their pathway and subjects, students engage in career investigation during Year 10 Personal Learning Plan, meet with the Careers Practitioner and take part in the Senior Years Expo. This occurs late July / early August and is an event which showcases the type of learning, assessments and experiences students can expect in each given subject. Learning Area Coordinators, teachers and Year 12 students are on hand to discuss subjects with parents and students. Many Industry representatives also support the event and are an invaluable source of information for Good Shepherd students. The Expo is recommended for students in Years 8-11.

Following students’ subject selections, a timetable is constructed. It should be noted if too few Year 10 students choose a subject it may not be feasible to run it in that year. In this case, students have further discussions with the NTCET Coordinator and use a 'reserve choice' to fill their timetable pattern.
