Year 6 Canberra Trip

In an exciting venture that blends education with adventure, our Year 6 students recently embarked on a journey to Australia’s capital — Canberra. The trip was not just a leisurely excursion but a deeply enriching experience aimed at fostering a profound understanding of Australia’s history, culture, and democratic principles.

As part of the educational tour, our students had the opportunity to delve into various programs designed to provide insights into the nation’s heritage. From visiting iconic landmarks to engaging in interactive sessions, every moment was tailored to ignite curiosity and promote active learning.

One of the key highlights of the trip was witnessing firsthand the institutions that govern our nation. Stepping into the halls of Parliament House, students were enveloped in the sense of democracy, gaining a deeper appreciation for the democratic process and the significance of civic participation.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. Through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program, the government extended financial support to alleviate the costs associated with the trip, underscoring the importance of ensuring all students have access to such invaluable learning opportunities. With a cost of $1,275.00 per student, this support was instrumental in making the trip feasible for all. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

The impact of the Canberra trip ignited a passion for civic engagement and instilled a sense of responsibility towards our nation. By immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Australia’s history and culture, our students emerged not just as spectators but as active participants in shaping the future of our democracy.

As they return from Canberra, our Year 6 students carry with them memories etched into their educational journey. They return not just as tourists but as ambassadors of knowledge, ready to inspire their peers and contribute positively to our society.

Student Testimonies

“I learnt about the history of Canberra, the history of voting, and also the name of the city. I saw New Parliament House, Old Parliament House, and the embassies. There was also lots of beautiful nature.

A place that left a lasting impression was the Australian War Memorial. It was a place that made me think about the world wars and how there are some wars still going on right now. It was a place of respect. It also had a lot of the army stuff in it that they used in the world wars.” – Skyla Orridge

“I found it interesting how the history of Canberra stretches further back than I thought. I loved the display of Canberra at the exhibition, and the different names that people came up with for Canberra. I loved the Captain James Cook memorial jet (a huge water fountain) balcony view.” – Kezia Bensam

“I enjoyed the AIS because I have a passion for sport and I enjoyed doing the simulators and activities. I also really enjoyed seeing all the areas that the athletes get to train at how much some facilities cost and how much they use the facilities for sports.” – Joel Shute
