GSLC Supports First Ever NT ISEF Finalists

In November 2022, the Australian Science and Engineering Fair (AUSSEF) was established by a group of dedicated educators to provide students with the opportunity to represent their state or territory, and the nation, at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) – the world's largest school science fair. Through fundraising efforts, last year nine students were sponsored to attend ISEF 2023 in Dallas, Texas.

Good Shepherd Lutheran College Head of Science, Mrs Jessica Neilsen, is an NT representative on the AUSSEF committee. This year, 12 students who have worked across nine projects have been selected as finalists, and efforts are underway to raise $150,000 for the students and chaperones to attend ISEF 2024 in Los Angeles. Out of the 12-student contingent, three are from the Northern Territory. This is the first time students from the NT will compete at ISEF. These students, from Darwin High School, have conducted a remarkable project on optimising energy-efficient classroom settings, utilising equipment from CSIRO and undertaking their experiments using Good Shepherd Lutheran College facilities, supported by Mrs Neilsen. This has highlighted the potential for these students to inspire the community and strengthen interschool relationships.

AUSSEF and our NT students are seeking support to raise a $30,000 grant or partial contribution to fund their position at ISEF 2024 by the end of February. If you would like to sponsor these students in presenting their work at ISEF, please visit the AUSSEF Royal Society of Victoria website or contribute via their GoFundMe page.
